Hey guys!
Okay, so this thread is just a little something that I thought up a few days back to get everyone to know a little more about eachother. The theme is A Tribute to Brian Jacques, may he rest in peace.
Basically I thought it'd be interesting to hear everyone's stories of what Brian Jacques book did they first read (Redwall or otherwise), how old they were, etc. And it would also be cool to hear all of the stuff you like about Brian Jacques' writing and so forth.
I'm really excited to read what you guys have to say! Here's my own little story of the first time I (attempted to) read Mossflower.
When I was about seven, I was really into reading, and well, I still am, but not as much as back then. I read all the time! My brother, who was fifteen or sixteen, was the same, just a big book worm. Well he had all of the Redwall books that were out at that time and I remember very clearly him sitting on the couch reading Mossflower. Now, being a kid, I always went by the rule of book thickness; The thicker is was, the harder it was to read. Most of you know, Mossflower is a fairly decent sized book.
I of course took one look at it and was in "Challenge accepted" mode. I was going to read that book if it killed me, which for all I knew, it would. I went outside and played, running around and, jumping on the trampoline, biding my time until my brother would abandon the book and it would be mine.
And of course that particular day, the book slipped my seven year old little mind. It wasn't until the next day after school, I came home and it was sitting on the couch. I took my chance, grabbed it, and ran to my room. It was go time. I was going to read it and everyone was going to think I was so smart because it was a big kid book.
I literally couldn't read the first chapter. I did that thing that teachers tell us to do when reading a new book; if you don't know more than five words on a page, it's too hard for you. I was up to four half way down the page and then I knew it was hopeless. My first impression- It was a book only for geniuses like my brother. I was pretty upset, but I accepted that I had been beat and put it back on the couch without a word.
It wasn't until I was ten that I picked it back up again and from then on I was hooked!
Yup well that's my story! =]
